99 Nights in the Forest has two kinds of danger: monsters you cannot kill, and enemies you can fight for loot. Knowing which is which is the difference between a full run and a wipe on night 4.

The Deer, Owl, Ram, Bat and Cat cannot be killed. Light, distance and the campfire are your only real defence against them. Everything else, from wolves to the Cultist King, drops loot when you take it down.

Unkillable

The five monsters you cannot kill

The Deer

The main threat. It hunts you through the forest at night and can enter a hungry state with more speed and damage. Bullets do nothing; light pushes it back.

The Owl

Can replace the Deer at night. It starts a stealth check where you must stay still. Move too much and it chases the nearest player. A flashlight stuns it.

The Ram

Can replace the Deer in the forest or Volcanic Biome. It snorts, winds up, then charges in a straight line and knocks trees down. Step sideways.

The Bat

Lives in the Bat Cave and underground caves. It is blind and only attacks inside its area, but it spawns Shadow Cultists. Flashlights do not stun it.

The Cat

Has about a 1 in 3 chance to appear when the Jungle Biome is present. It swipes up close and pounces; a red circle shows where it will land, even through walls.

All five ignore normal weapons. Your plan is always the same: keep the campfire big, carry light, and do not travel alone at night.

Big fights

Bosses and how to beat them

01

Cultist King

Place 4 Cultist Gems on the four altars in the Cultist King base in the Volcanic Biome. He only uses melee, so fight from range with a crossbow, rifle or shotgun, in daylight, with friends. Rewards include coins, the Cultist King Antler, Wildfire potions and an Infernal Sword or Crossbow.

02

Frog King

Waits inside the Frog Cave, which opens with 8 Frog Keys. Expect frog waves first, then a boss that poisons. Bring ranged weapons and poison protection.

03

Alien Mothership

After the aliens arrive on night 2, a glowing green UFO leads to the mothership. Elite aliens guard each room, and you scan one to open the next door.

Stay alive

How to survive the monsters

  • Feed the campfire before every night. The Deer will not enter its light.
  • Carry a flashlight on every night trip. The Forest watchtower has five Old Flashlights.
  • Travel in a group after dark and leave the Bat Cave for daytime.
  • Fight cultists and animals from range; most of them only hit up close.
  • Watch the ground in the Jungle. A red circle means the Cat is about to land.
