Fishing in 99 Nights in the Forest is a safe way to get food, scrap, Frog Keys and even diamonds. It starts once the fishing hut appears on the map at campfire level 2.
You only need a free Old Rod to begin. Catching fish levels it up, and better rods pull rarer fish from deeper ponds, the snow and even lava.
How to start fishing
- 1
Upgrade the campfire to level 2 so the fishing hut appears.
- 2
Take a free Old Rod from inside the hut.
- 3
Click a pond to cast and hit the green zone on the bar until the fish comes out.
- 4
Fill the rod XP bar, then press E at the upgrade bench for a Good Rod, then a Strong Rod.
Type yay fishing in chat while fishing for 2 free diamonds, once per account.
How fishing works
- Equip a rod, stand by water and click the pond to cast.
- When a fish bites, two bars appear. The right bar shows how hooked the fish is.
- Click when the moving cursor on the left bar is over the green area.
- Repeat until the right bar is full and the fish comes out.
- White, see-through ripples mark fast spots. They fade after a few catches.
Fishing rods and how to upgrade them
| Rod | How to get it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Old Rod | Free inside the fishing hut; the Pelt Trader also sells it for a Wolf Pelt | Starter rod |
| Good Rod | Upgrade a full-XP Old Rod at the upgrade bench | Recommended for lava fishing |
| Strong Rod | Upgrade a full-XP Good Rod | Best catch rate |
Upgrades are free. Equip the rod, fill its XP bar by catching fish, then press E at the upgrade bench in the hut. The Fisherman class (50 diamonds) levels rods faster; see the classes guide.
All fish and where to catch them
| Fish | Where | Unlocks at |
|---|---|---|
| Mackerel | Any forest pond | Campfire level 2 |
| Salmon | Any forest pond | Campfire level 3 |
| Swordfish | Dark blue ponds with skeletons | Campfire level 4 |
| Clownfish | Dark blue ponds with skeletons | Campfire level 6 |
| Jellyfish | Dark blue ponds with skeletons; gives a short speed boost | Campfire level 6 |

| Eel | Snow Biome ponds | Campfire level 6 |

Cook fish at the campfire before eating; cooked food fills more hunger. Snow and lava fish depend on your biome; see the Snow Biome and Volcano guides.
What else you can fish up
Frog Keys
Fish in ponds once frogs appear around day 3 to 5. Eight keys open the Frog Cave in the jungle.
Scrap items
Bolts, sheet metal, tires, old radios and engines. Grind them for scrap.
Gems
Cultist Gems and Forest Gem Fragments can come up from the water.
Trident
A weapon a little better than the spear, close to a Katana in damage.
The Frog Cave steps are in our jungle guide.

Fishing tips
- Fish in daylight, or on quiet nights close to camp.
- Look for white ripples; they mark faster catches.
- Keep sack space free so you do not lose catches.
- Stay back from the lava edge when lava fishing.
- Upgrade to the Good Rod before trying the volcano.
Auto-fishing scripts are a fast way to a ban. Our script guide covers the risks; the steps here get the same badges safely.
